Van Gaal Eyes A Familiar Face For United - Why Dutch Defender Should Move To Old Trafford

As it stands, Manchester United’s centre-back options are Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans.  With veterans Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic having left Old Trafford, there is now a very youthful look to the Red Devils’ backline.  The arrival of 18-year-old left-back Luke Shaw is only further proof of that.

Atletico Madrid Star Linked With Old Trafford Move - Why Manchester United Should Try To Sign Him

Manchester United had never really had a problem in defence until they entered the 2013/2014 campaign. Maybe it was because Sir Alex Ferguson had a huge influence, or the staff he employed were far better than what David Moyes offered. One thing for certain is the fact that United had huge injury problems at the back. It got so bad at one point that Michael Carrick had to slot in for a couple of games as they had just one fit centre back.

A Closer Look At How Phil Jones Bossed The Game In Manchester United's Win Over Shakhtar

David Moyes has been feeling the pressure recently as Manchester United have fallen down the Premier League table and came into their Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk on the back of two home defeats. So, ahead of the game it would have been natural for the Old Trafford side to be feeling slightly nervous, despite their place in the next round already being booked. 5 Players Who Can Help Manchester United Retain The Premier League Title

Fear not United fans. Despite all the upheaval at Old Trafford in the summer, with the departure of the master Sir Alex Ferguson and the arrival of the apprentice David Moyes, Manchester United still possess the capabilities to add title number 21 to their list of Premier League accolades. True, United have not been firing on all cylinders in the league and have struggled against teams like West Bromwich Albion, Southampton, and Stoke City, but there have been signs in recent weeks that the tide is beginning to turn. The victory against league leaders Arsenal, although through a somewhat fortuitous goal, was very significant. Had United lost, they would have found themselves 11 points behind with four defeats in 11 matches and practically out of the title race before December. With the Red Devils managing to avoid such a situation, here are 5 reasons why United can reach the summit once more come May:

Why Chris Smalling Should Have Gone Out On Loan

Chris Smalling seems to be one of Roy Hodgson’s ‘teacher’s pets’ within the England squad. This is perhaps down to the fact he gave him his big break by putting him in the first team at Fulham which then enabled him to get a move to Old Trafford.  In his first season at United, Smalling impressed so much that he was named on the bench for the 2011 Champions League Final against Barcelona ahead of the more experienced Jonny Evans.

    The England Right-Back Crisis

This a massively personal opinion, but I genuinely believe we, as a footballing nation, have a problem on the right side of our defence.

UEFA Under 21 Championships - We coulda been a contender!

Let’s play a game I’ve unimaginatively titled “Cut out the middle man”. It basically involves us looking ahead two weeks to the end of the UEFA European Under-21 Championships and pre-empting the latest upcoming inquest into the state of English international football.

The competition will obviously be won by Spain. They have

Fictional wonderkids or the real deal - defenders

The Football Manager gaming franchise has been one of the most time-consuming things to invade the lives of the average man (and occasional woman) since, well, football itself. Every season the scramble gets underway to sign the 'wonderkids' each version throws up. But how accurate was Football Manager 2013? it would be harsh to expect potential to be fulfilled immediately, just like in the video game, but let's have a look at the seasons of Premier League defenders bestowed with the tag.

    Clash of 'La Leagues'

Tomorrow's Champions League encounter at the Bernabeu is one of the most anticipated meetings between the sides in some time.
