Vermaelen Close To Old Trafford Move - What United Need From The Belgian Defender

Formerly regarded was one of the best defenders in the Premier League, Thomas Vermaelen looks sets to sign for Manchester United as part of new manager Louis van Gaal’s rebuilding job.  The move would see the Red Devils acquire an experienced centre-back to support younger players like Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

According to the Metro, Vermaelen is reported to have agreed personal terms on a switch to Old Trafford, with negotiations regarding a fee for the Belgian still ongoing between United and Arsenal.  The deal could turn out to be of benefit to both clubs; a sum of around £11 million would provide a boost to the Gunners’ spending on other players in the transfer market, whilst Vermaelen is the type of player United really need right now.

Having signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2009, it seems as the though the player is someone who has been around forever.  Despite that, Vermaelen remains only 28 years of age and should still have plenty left in the tank providing he can avoid any more injury problems.

Approaching half a century of caps for Belgium, there is no doubt that the defender has shown his quality over the years.  If United are to sign him, they will need Vermaelen to rediscover his best form quickly as they attempt to return to being one of Europe’s elite.
