5 World Cup Stars, Who Might Be Heading For The Premier League

A busy summer of transfer dealing always follows a major tournament and already in 2014, we’ve seen Enner Valencia, Alexis Sanchez and David Ospina complete moves to the Premier League. But who will follow them? Here are five players who could switch to the Premiership after starring roles at the World Cup.

    Mats Hummels

Manchester United are third favourites at 6.00 with Betfair to win the Premier League this season and manager Louis Van Gaal is linked with the majority of available talent in the wake of Brazil 2014.

With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic having left the club, there is a serious need for a replacement centre half and German World Cup Winner Hummels is believed to be a long term target. The 25 year old defender was a solid performer at the back for Germany while scoring two vital goals along the way to the final but it’s felt that Barcelona may prove to be a bigger draw for the Borussia Dortmund star.

    Divock Origi

19 year old Lille striker Origi attracted media attention when he replaced Romelu Lukaku to score Belgium’s only goal in their group stage win against the Russians. Almost as soon as the ball hit the back of the net, Liverpool and Spurs were linked with the player’s signature but having lost out on Loic Remy, it’s expected that Brendan Rodger’s side will now complete the purchase.

Origi was described as a teenage scoring sensation by one area of the press but his overall record in France suggests there is work to be done if he is to become an Anfield regular. In 40 games for Lille, he has found the net on just six occasions and while he often plays on the wing in Ligue 1, that’s a record that needs improvement.

    Islam Slimani

Algerian forward Slimani may have the record for having the highest number of links to Premiership sides this summer. Stoke City, West Ham, Newcastle, Everton and Crystal Palace are just five of the names mentioned in connection with a signature but any move has stalled amidst reports that current club Sporting Lisbon are holding out for a fee of £10m.

Slimani was one of the stars of a positive World Cup for the Algerians and his two goals sparked the interest. £10m may be seen as too much for a man who has scored eight goals in 26 league games in Portugal but expect further negotiations ahead of the new campaign.

    Memphis Depay

20 year old PSV winger Depay scored twice for the Netherlands in Brazil and his pace would be an undoubted asset for any Premier League side. Manchester United and Liverpool have been linked but according to some areas of the press, Spurs are the front runners in this particular chase.

If Depay does travel to White Hart Lane, he will face competition from Andros Townsend and Nacer Chadli so overall, Old Trafford seems a more likely destination.

    Arturo Vidal

Once again, it’s Manchester United leading the way in the chase for Vidal who featured for Chile in Brazil. Louis Van Gaal will, however, face competition from Liverpool and possibly Chelsea so it’s a question of whether the 27 year old will sacrifice Champions League football this season in the hope that United will be challenging for the Premier League title once again.

Current club Juventus were said to be demanding in excess of £40m for the playmaker but the key to the deal could be Manchester United’s Nani who may head to Turin as part of the overall fee.

Mats Hummels Wanted By Manchester United - Why A Transfer May Be Complicated

As the reshuffle at Old Trafford continues, the latest name to be linked with a move to Manchester United is Mats Hummels.  The Daily Mail have reported that a fee has been agreed with Borussia Dortmund for the defender.  This, however, contrasts with comments from the German club’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, who seemed to dismiss the rumour.

THREE Centre-Backs Who Could Replace David Luiz For Chelsea

Chelsea are a team who have been left with a sour taste in their mouth after the 2013/14 season ended trophyless for them, despite the return of 'The Special One'. Jose Mourinho is now more determined than ever to win a trophy and he is eyeing the big one: the Premier League title. So far the Portuguese manager has made some big steps in his pursuit of Premier League glory next season, as he has bought Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas. These are two great signings who will vastly improve Chelsea's attack. However, the club have also sold David Luiz, weakening their defence.

THREE Players Who Manchester United Could Sign Instead Of Arsenal Captain

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for a central defender all summer now, but there hasn't been any movement just yet. It appears as though United are chasing a relatively cheap replacement for Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. They have looked at two quite different types of footballers. Stefan de Vrij is very much a young, up-and-coming centre-back with a lot of potential. Thomas Vermaelen, on the other hand, is an experienced Premier League defender with not too many years left at the top. Therefore, it is hard to pinpoint what type of defender the Red Devils want.

6 Centre-Backs Who Manchester City Should Be Looking At To Shore Up Their Defence

Although Manchester City aren't necessarily struggling at the back this season, you can't help but feel they'd be even stronger if they had another world class centre-back to stand in when Vincent Kompany isn't available and to partner him when he returns. City do have Martin Demichelis, Matija Nastasic and Joleon Lescott, but the latter is expected to leave in January.

Why It’s Time For Borussia Dortmund To Stop Acting Like Underdogs

BVB have stepped their game up in recent years, as they went so far as to win the Bundesliga two times in a row, participate in every Champions League since the 2011/12 season and even make it to the most recent final of the competition.  Despite this fact, their transfer policy still looks like one of a Premier League team contending for a Europa League spot.

Why my World Cup support lies with the German national team

I'm a fan of good football, exciting young talent, the promotion of discipline and efficiency in the team and finally that a team is a joy to watch. Now, before I get sent a volley of abuse about betrayal to England, my home country after all, it will serve you well to know that I have German ancestors that don't date that far back. So while some part of me is actually German, the main reason why I support Germany is for the reasons I listed in the first sentence.

Is The Number Of Quality Centre-Backs In Decline?

This transfer window has seen money splashed about like it’s going out of fashion – with the concept of a player’s value now seemingly redundant. Yet in all this movement madness we have seen very little significant activity in terms of defensive transfers.

Why Arsenal Should Forget About A Striker And Sign A Centre-back

Following Arsenal's 3-1 home loss to Aston Villa last Saturday, an Arsenal fan was filmed speaking passionately about his (and indeed everybody else's) disillusionment with the club and the lack of spending over the summer.

Is Mats Hummels The Perfect Replacement For Carles Puyol?

Barcelona are in desperate need of a new central defender for the new season as they only have 2 established centre backs. There is no denying that Pique and Puyol are both talented players but while Carles Puyol struggles to stay fit they rely heavily on Javier Mascherano to fill the void.

End of the season...what are we going to do?!

I hate this time of year especially when there is no international tournament to help us through the summer to the start of the new domestic season.
