Steady, Jonjo. Steady! When I’m not irritating people with my views on Liverpool FC and Football in general, I have my own business. Part of my reason for working for myself is because I got tired of all these stupid workplace clichés like, Reaching out and Nice to have or need to have…? Bo-ring!
With Hull City and Crystal both being pretty much written off as relegated before a ball has even been kicked, we take a look at five teams who received similar predications following their promotion yet defied the odds to more than survive.
Football teams south of the river have not had the best of times in the top flight over the past decade or so.
It was one of those moments that makes you think that this wonderful game of football is orchestrated by some sort of higher power.
A summer without football is now upon us following last weekend's final matches. Crystal Palace and Watford completed the fixtures in what was really an unexpectedly dull match.
Kevin Phillips is one of those players that seem to have been around forever but the special thing about Phillips is that he hasn’t just been around forever he’s also consistently produced the goods and scored goals at the highest level in his time as a footballer.
Before the heady days of Cristiano Ronaldo, or even David Beckham was something more artistic, and undoubtedly more than a bit insane. That something was Eric Cantona. The number 7 shirt has always been an iconic one for Man United, and his footballing abilities lit up the league, when he wasn't embroiled in controversy. Ian Holloway’s Crystal Palace advanced to the final of the Championship play-offs after his side beat a lacklustre Brighton team last night thanks to two goals from winger Wilfried Zaha. They will now face Gianfranco Zola’s Watford team in the final at Wembley in just under two weeks time.
Since Billy Davies returned as manager of Nottingham Forest earlier in the season it seems like everything he touches turns to gold. This upturn in form is in stark contrast with the moment when he took charge in February. Shortly before he returned for his second stint at the midlands club, the side was languishing in mid table and Alex McLeish had just exited the City Ground after only seven games in charge. Leicester and Nottingham Forest are in 7th and 8th respectively and both still have realistic chances of finishing in the top 6.
It is always difficult for smaller clubs to keep hold of their most talented players, especially in today's world where money seems to be the deciding factor in most football related matters. Whilst it can be hoped that a larger, and more financially powerful, club will pay a fair price to sign an up and coming star, what can the selling club do if they don't wish to lose such an individual, and is it often in the player's interest to make the move?
Wilfried Zaha might not be the only Crystal Palace youngster to make the step up to the Premier League next season, as out of the limelight Zaha's team-mate Jonathan Williams has also been turning in some head-turning performances in the Eagles' push for promotion.
Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimoivc, Radamel Falcao, Cristiano Ronaldo and......Glenn Murray?!
