    Sam Allardyce scoops experienced defender

I am sure that many of you have described, or abused, a footballer as 'a rat' in your existence, but Sam Allardyce can expect one of his players to be referred to as just that after he has scooped Romanian full-back Razvan Rat on a free deal. Bargain, I hear you shout. And you'd be right. Although he doesn't scurry around bins at the back of a nightclub in his spare time, that we know of, like his namesakes, he is sure to prove to be a repulsive sight for opponents because of his ability.

The Shakhtar Donetsk man will join Allardyce and his troops over the summer and will be bringing his wealth of experience with him.  The Romanians don't have the best track record in the Premier League, but with the captain's armband and 88 caps for his country the boy must have some talent.

Fat Sam had this to say about his new defender: "I'm hugely happy that we've got a player of his experience and his character.

"Shakhtar had offered him a very good contract, but his ambition was to come and try his abilities and skills in England. He speaks perfect English, which he taught himself, and that shows the discipline and the character of the man. Discipline, character and ability are the three big things in the Premier League."

Does anyone else think he will have the nickname 'Roland' as soon as he strolls into Upton Park?
