Can Juan Mata?

Sitting in the Matthew Harding stand at Stamford Bridge last weekend something was blindingly obvious – Chelsea desperately need a creative midfield player.

What type of quizzer are you? Do you sit drunk and clueless in the corner? Or are you halfway to Nerdsville with a tank top on and a smart-arse smile? Can you admit to watching Eggheads - even if only in a moment of weakness? No matter which category you fall into – try our pub quiz and prove to yourself that the years of watching and talking about footy have not been a complete waste of time. But please try not to cheat, for as my headmaster used to say “You’re only cheating on yourself”, which ironically is not what his wife said to him, when she caught him in congress with his secretary.
Blackburn boss Steve Kean has denied having a row with El-Hadji Diouf, but does admit the controversial Senegalese international is likely to leave before the close of the transfer window.
On 31st January 2011 the British transfer record was smashed by Chelsea, signing Fernando Torres for £50million on a five-and-a-half year contract. That same day Andy Carroll’s move from Newcastle to Liverpool for £35million made him the most expensive British footballer in the game.
On 31st January 2011 the British transfer record was smashed by Chelsea, signing Fernando Torres for £50million on a five-and-a-half year contract. That same day Andy Carroll’s move from Newcastle to Liverpool for £35million made him the most expensive British footballer in the game. At first glance Chelsea had signed one of the world’s most prolific goal scorers for only £15million more than Liverpool’s deal for a young unproven 22 year old striker. Carroll’s inexperience is illustrated by the fact that he had only one season of Premiership experience.
Hartlepool nil Huddersfield nil. Goalscoring opportunities nil (or at least it felt like that!). Entertainment nil. Reports on Sky nil. Hours driving to and from the game a lot more than nil. Ticket price nil. Money earned more than nil. And it's those last two which I try to remember on days like this.
Manchester United earn all three points after going down to a dodgy goal. Joey Barton and Alex Song find themselves reigniting an old flame. Arsenal still look wasteful in the final third. And Fernando Torres still looks way off that £50 mark despite his best efforts this weekend.
The Premiership is back and already hitting the headlines…

One of the bonuses of not covering a Premier League match for Sky is that there aren't too many foreign players on view. I've got nothing against overseas footballers, it's just that some of them have outrageous long names, which can make even the most competent broadcasters sound like tong-tied idiots.
Another season came and went and the Arsenal trophy cabinet remained unopened. It has been six years now since they last won a major cup and they can’t afford not to win something of note this year.
50 million pounds in modern football will buy you a prolific striker, but at grassroots level how much of a difference can 50 million pounds make?
After three long months the Premier League returns this weekend with Manchester United vying for their 20th domestic title.
So, there is little over three weeks to go of the transfer window and clubs are still scrambling to sign the one quality player that will take them to the next level. Manchester City signed Sergio Aguero but still want Samir Nasri, rivals United are pushing for Wesley Sneijder, Chelsea are close to brining in “mini” Drogba, Arsenal signed Alex ‘Theo Walcott MK:II’ Oxlade-Chamberlian earlier today while Liverpool look set to begin talks with Birmingham City over the proposed transfer of Scott Dann.
It always feels like the longest 10 weeks in history when the football season’s finished. Just what is there to do over the summer? The only thing to read about is transfer rumours dreamt up by the club’s tea lady, or how your favourite stars sandcastle skills seem to be dwindling to say the least.
