With the summer transfer window now firmly shut, it's a good time to reflect on the summer that Arsenal had - a reflection which could have been much, much worse had Wenger not splashed the cash on Mesut Ozil on deadline day. Arsenal only made three other signings this summer, spending £0 in the process - except the loan fee for Emiliano Viviano and the compensation that was paid to Auxerre for Yaya Sanogo.
I wrote a blog a few weeks ago which addressed Joe Kinnear's madness but also included a joke about Arsene Wenger having a knack for buying unknown French players with dodgy knees.
If you don't remember the name then you will almost certainly remember the hair! The colourful Nigerian has recently been in the news with reports that he lied about his age during his career and that he is actually 12 years older than he claimed. Whether this is true or not, he was certainly not trying to remain inconspicuous with the assortment of multi-coloured hairstyles he showed off during his career, although he wasn't a bad player, at times...
As the old adage goes, form is temporary and class is permanent. It looks like a simple enough saying to determine which players are class and which are in form. I suppose that’s what makes the difference between theory and practise…
