Chelsea Star The Perfect Fit For Barcelona - Here's Why

According to the Daily Telegraph Barcelona have reignited their interest in Chelsea’s Brazilian defender David Luiz, following Carles Puyol’s announcement yesterday that he will leave the Camp Nou.

The 35-year-old La Masia graduate will say his farewells at the end of the season, having spent his entire career at Barcelona, winning six La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues.

During his press conference on Tuesday, he revealed that he has struggled to recover from his knee injuries and regain the level of fitness he expects of himself.

It is most certainly the end of an era at Barcelona, and regardless of whether Tata Martino will be there next season, they must find a new defensive partner for Pique.

There have been a few names mentioned regarding the centre-back position, Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez, or Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels but one name continues to pop up.

David Luiz has been linked with Barcelona for two seasons now, and despite Jose Mourinho’s rotation policy, it is clear that Cahill and Terry are the starting centre-backs.

It is obvious that Pique is not the same without Puyol, but Luiz would fit perfectly into Barcelona’s philosophy of playing out from the back.

And at 6ft2 he would no doubt improve the team’s aerial ability, in both an attacking and defence sense, which has long been seen as a weakness of Barcelona.

He is bold, adventurous and not to mention a great athlete. Luiz and Pique have all the ingredients for a great partnership.
