Swansea stalwart set for move to boyhood heroes

Liverpool have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Swansea City captain Ashley Williams. The Daily Mirror report that the Anfield side will hold a distinct advantage in their pursuit of the Wales skipper, as Williams supported Liverpool avidly as a boy, idolising John Barnes. With Jamie Carragher retiring at this season’s close and Daniel Agger under the constant consideration of Manchester City, Brendan Rodgers is keen further develop his squad with the signing of Williams.

The Gunners made sustained efforts to sign the in-form defender throughout the January period and, despite unsuccessful negotiations, have reportedly left their £9million bid on the table. The magnificent form of their club captain has been a major reason behind Swansea’s continued progression under Michael Laudrup. Williams has produced commanding and flawless displays on a highly consistent basis this term.

Williams, at the age of 28, appears to have the blessing of manager Michael Laudrup. The Danish manager has recognised the impeccable manner in which Williams has led his team this season and will reward his captain by granting him a move to one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs. With both Wenger and Rodgers seemingly desperate to bolster their squad by signing the centre half, this is a proposed transfer that could delve well into the summer months.
