Premier League return on the cards for former Arsenal midfielder

According to The Daily Mirror, former Arsenal star Mathieu Flamini may be about to embark on a return to the Premier League, with Aston Villa and Southampton appearing his most likely destinations. The French midfielder is out of contract this summer at AC Milan, who are unwilling to offer his desired 2 year contract. Flamini left Arsenal for the Serie A outfit on a free transfer in July 2008, having previously become a pivotal player at The Emirates.

The Frenchman, surprisingly capped only 3 occasions at international level, has suffered a slightly turbulent time during his 5 years at AC Milan. Flamini has frequently been dogged with persistent injury problems, namely a knee injury that ruled him out of the entire 2011-2012 campaign. Making only 117 appearances across 5 seasons, the 29 year olds Milan career appears to be dwindling to a close. All considered it is no surprise that Flamini eagerly awaits the opportunity to impose himself upon the Premier League for a second time, harnessing his combative and versatile capabilities.

The Marseille born midfielder undoubtedly grew in stature throughout his time under former boss Arsene Wenger; upon leaving he represented a major loss to The Gunners who had become dependent on the manner in which he ably supported Cesc Fabregas. Although his injury stricken time in Italy could be described as bleak, Flamini, particularly on a free transfer, would represent great value to Paul Lambert, Mauricio Pochettino and a multitude of other Premier League managers.
