German centre back craves move to Barcelona

Mats Hummels appears to have opened the door for a summer move to Barcelona. Despite signing a long term contract last summer at Borussia Dortmund, Sky Sports claim that the Germany centre half has issued a come and get me plea to Tito Vilanova. Hummels, who came through the ranks at Bayern Munich, told a German sports weekly that ‘Barcelona is one of two or three clubs that would make me listen to them if they did make a move for me.’

The German international has been at the cornerstone of Dortmund’s recent success, alongside now households names such as Lewandowski, Subotic, Goetze, Piszczek and Kagawa (now of Manchester United). Hummels and Dortmund claimed successive league titles in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, the latter with a Bundesliga record of 81 points. Although they’ve now surrounded their domestic crown rather meekly to Bayern Munich, Jurgen Klopp’s side have received further plaudits for the manner and style in which they’ve qualified for the semi finals of the UEFA Champions League.

At the age of 24, Hummels would represent a great signing for the Catalan side. The German would bring levels of consistency and presence that are required in order for Barca to achieve continued success both domestically and in Europe. Despite their highly publicised qualities and undoubtedly deserved praise, Barcelona have looked increasingly vulnerable defensively over the last two seasons and the addition of Hummels would provide much needed stability.
