Liverpool look to secure services of young Ajax defender

The Metro today reported that Liverpool look set to acquire the Premier League teams latest must have accessory, a Belgian.

Ajax defender, Toby Alderweireld, has told Belgium paper Het Laatste Nieuws: 'Usually I do not want to play for an English club that’s in mid-table but unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meets my [other] criteria.'

I would suggest that Red’s fans hold fire on the second mortgage and resist putting his name on their shirt just yet. The twenty four year old has ‘previous’ in this area, "If the time is right, it will come, but now Ajax is the most important thing," he told AT5 in December 2012."But a club such as Arsenal or Tottenham. They are fantastic clubs and would be a step forward."

You can’t blame the player for courting his audience with the adeptness of a wily Casanova. AC Milan and Manchester United are also rumoured to be amongst up to fifteen clubs coveting his lengthy signature and doubtless in the next few months there’ll be comments about his love of fashion and grey, rainy days.

The power is with the player in these situations and Ajax can only hope to hold out for a figure worthy of a player they have developed since he was fifteen.
