Premier League pair to battle for outcast defender

Another day and another defender is being linked to Liverpool, with The Metro indicating that the Reds are set to fight it out with Aston Villa for the services of Joleon Lescott. Brendan Rodgers desire for new defenders is no secret and they have been linked to a whole raft of centre backs in recent weeks from every corner of the world, with Jamie Carragher's retirement and Martin Skrtel falling out of favour being the main reasons for this search.

Lescott had been a key player in Manchester City's title win last year however he has seemingly become unrequited at the Ethiad, consistently struggling for games despite Vincent Kompany being injured for large chunks of the year. He might at times be a little error prone but Lescott has proven over the years to be one of the leagues better performing defenders and with that in mind it comes as a shock to see City so keen to get rid.

Now whilst several of the players Liverpool have been linked with they are going to need to fight tooth and nail to fend off clubs in a better position than themselves, you can't really say this regarding their supposed fight with Villa for Lescott. The player might be a Villa fan but choosing a relegation battle or a champions league battle is surely not a contest to make.

Of course if he does make the move to Anfield then any friends he might have made during his time at Everton might not be so keen to be inviting him in for a coffee.
