Manchester United defender wanted in Italy

After clearing out a large chunk of their wage bill last summer with high profile departures such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva it looks like AC Milan have decided younger, cheaper talent can only get you so far.

According to The Metro, they are considering a bid for Manchester United’s Nenamja Vidic to shore up a leaky defence.

Vidic, 31, is in the final year of his contract so shouldn’t break the bank in terms of his transfer fee. His wages however will be a different matter and will be a considerable cost for Milan.

The Italian side trail leaders Juventus by 11 points in Serie A and have struggled defensively since Silva departed for PSG but apparently see Vidic as the man to link up with Phillippe Mexes in the heart of defence.

Before agreeing to bring in the Serbian on a long expensive contract though Milan would do well to consider his injury record. United’s captain has only featured in 18 of his side’s 44 matches this season due to on-going knee problems and even when fit, was dropped to the bench in favour of Jonny Evans for the crucial Champions League clash with Real Madrid earlier this month.
