Could Rooney be off to Munich?

If you were hoping that Sir Alex’s assurances that Wayne Rooney is staying at Old Trafford would put a stop to rumours of his departure then I’m afraid you are out of luck.

The latest proposed destination for Rooney is Bayern Munich, with The Daily Mail reporting that Pep Guardiola, who will take the reins at Bayern next season, is an admirer of the 27-year-old.

The Bundesliga table toppers are apparently one of the few teams in Europe who could afford Rooney’s £230,000 a week wages, and with Robin Van Persie seemingly installed as United’s lead striker after his summer move the England international could well be tempted by a move.

Rooney was left on the bench for last week’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid which sparked rumours that he may be about to exit Old Trafford but with the list of possible destinations so short a move could prove tricky.

The big two in La Liga, PSG and Manchester City are probably the only other sides in Europe’s top league’s who could realistically table an offer for Rooney, none of whom have expressed any serious interest so far.

This may force him to remain in the Red half of Manchester for a while longer, but if rumours of a falling out with Fergie are true it may not be for much longer.
