Greek stopper wants to compete in Europe

With Werder Bremen struggling in the bottom half of the Bundesliga table, defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos has claimed he will have to consider his future at the club at the end of the season.

According to Sky Sports, the 24-year-old has suggested that a failure to secure European football may result in him looking for a move away.  With the German club not looking likely to meet Papastathopoulos’ ambitions, it is possible that he could be tempted to leave the side, despite only joining permanently in the summer.  The centre-back initially joined on a season-long loan at the start of last year’s campaign, but his impressive performances saw Bremen exercise their buy-out option in the deal.

A Greece international, Papastathopoulos made the headlines during the opening game of Euro 2012 as he was sent off for two bookable offences.  The decisions by the referee, however, were deemed by many as unfair on the defender, who later returned to help his country reach the quarter-final stage of the tournament.

After impressing at AEK Athens, Papastathopoulos moved to Italy to join Genoa before ultimately being signed by AC Milan.  Having made a total of only seven appearances for the Rossoneri, he may relish the chance to play for one of Europe’s elite sides once again.
