Liverpool weigh up move for Dutch defender

It’s good to hear that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers made the most of his free weekend, flying out to Rotterdam on Sunday to watch Holland international Stefan De Vrij captain Feyenoord to a 2-1 victory over PSV.

Presumably that was a more attractive option than watching his former side win their first ever silverware at Wembley whilst sobbing “that could have been me!” as Joe Allen layed a consoling arm upon his shoulders.

According to The Daily Mail, De Vrij has been a Liverpool target for a few months now and with Jamie Carragher retiring, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger woefully short of form, and Sebastian Coates still rubbish the Red’s are in dire need of a new centre-back.

The 21-year-old has already made over 100 appearances for Feyernoord as well as making his first appearance for the Dutch national side last year. He would certainly have the potential to succeed in the Premier League if Rodgers did decide to bring him in over the summer.

He will apparently face competition from Newcastle though who also had scouts at Sunday’s game.

Earlier in the week reports linked Bruno Martins Indi, another Feyernoord defender, with a move to England in what could emerge to be a £25m package deal alongside De Vrij.

The two Dutchmen have been first choice for the national team under new boos Louis Van Gaal replacing Everton’s Johnny Heitinga and Feyenoord’s other central defender Joris Mathijsen.
