Royals wanted Sigurdsson return

Brian McDermott has claimed that Reading were involved in deadline day talks to bring Gylfi Sigurdsson back to the Madejski Stadium.
According to Sky Sports, the Tottenham midfielder was a target for the Royals but a deal between the two clubs did not come to fruition. Having started his senior career in England after coming through Reading’s academy, Sigurdsson played 42 times for the Berkshire side in the Championship and had an incredible scoring record of almost a goal every other game. Finding the net at a better rate than most strikers, he naturally attracted interest from the Premier League. However, when he did eventually leave the club, Hoffenheim was his destination.
A loan spell at Swansea last season highlighted Sigurdsson’s abilities in the top flight and he signed for Tottenham following a successful campaign at the Liberty Stadium. Having often been utilised as a substitute by Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas, the chance of more playing time at the Madejski Stadium may have tempted him away.
A 23-year-old Iceland international with bags of potential, the signing of Sigurdsson would have been an emphatic statement by Reading. Unfortunately for Brian McDermott and Royals fans it wasn’t to be, but, should the club retain their Premier League status, a move could be resurrected in the summer.
