Could Remy be heading to Newcastle?

Good news is in short supply on Tyneside right now, so to hear TEAMtalk.com reporting that Marseille are likely to be tempted to sell Loic Remy in January must at least provide a glimmer of hope to Newcastle supporters.

Things couldn't really get any worse for the Magpies right now; they are firmly in a relegation dog-fight, have sold the man who has scored over 50 percent of their goals this season for just seven million and on Saturday they were dumped out the cup by championship side Brighton following a quite toothless performance.

In that games against Brighton strikers Nile Ranger, Sammy & Shola Ameobi all looked like the last thing they were capable of was hitting the target, let alone scoring a goal, so with this in mind a move for a new striker looks a priority.

They do of course have Papiss Cisse who it is hoped will flourish now Ba has moved on, since it seemed physically impossible for these two players to score on the pitch at the same time.

Cisse though cannot do it on his own and the signing of Remy would at least add another player capable of scoring goals to the side. However (not to put yet more misery on supporters), Newcastle are unlikely to be the only club in for the much talked about Remy and it remains to be seen whether the traditionally tight Mike Ashley is prepared to stump of the cash.

You would think though that signing Remy would be in Ashley's best interests given that there is now a real danger that Newcastle could go down, which might just be enough fuel to tempt the owner into action given that relegation would leave him out of pocket. Remy would unlikely have the same impact as Ba and of course would take time to gel, but he would surely be a vastly better option than the misfiring options that we saw against Brighton.

Further to this he might just do what Ba never could and form a partnership with Cisse, a player who when on form and played in the right way can make up the goals they have lost from Ba's departure.
