Paul Lambert to look at Lescott

If ever there was a team who needed a few experienced heads to blend with a side of youngsters, it is Aston Villa.

Much has been made of their first eleven’s remarkably young average age and a horrible run of results over the Christmas period left the Villains with an aggregate score of 17-2, just one point from the relegation zone.

The Daily Mirror are reporting that the experienced head Paul Lambert has in mind to add some solidity to his young side is 30-year-old Joleon Lescott – and my, what a head it is.

Apparently the Manchester City ‘ace’ (their words not mine) is valued at £10m and it won’t only be this rather hefty fee that presents something of a stumbling block to any potential move. Lescott would have to take a rather substantial pay cut in order to join Villa’s relegation scrap (sounds appealing) as the Midlands side’s chairman Randy Learner is determined to cut the wage bill.

It is still something of a mystery why Roberto Mancini has confined Lescott, who was a vital part of last season’s championship winning side, to the bench this time around. Matija Nastasic has been preferred alongside Vincent Kompany while Lescott gets gloomier and gloomier on the bench – on the plus side he’s had plenty of opportunity to get to know Scott Sinclair.

Paul Lambert will be hoping the offer of first team football will be enough to wrench Lescott from his well-paid bench warming position to a slightly less well paid but still not too shabby spot as Ciaran Clark’s babysit... Woops I mean centre back partner.
