Will Matt Derbyshire shine at the seaside?

Never really staying anywhere long enough to do the job he is supposed to, Matt Derbyshire could be moving to yet another club.

According to Sky Sports, Blackpool may be the latest of a fairly long list of teams that a 26-year-old can claim to have played for.  The striker was born in Great Harwood and the first team of his senior career would quite sweetly be Great Harwood Town.  This was 10 long years ago and, despite only being 16, Derbyshire was too good for the level he was playing at, scoring for fun by netting 18 times in his last nine appearances.

Following his impressive goal-scoring feats, he was bought by his boyhood club Blackburn Rovers for £20,000, which was a club record fee for Great Harwood Town.  By the time he was able to feature regularly in the Premier League, his former club had folded.  So too, it appeared, had his ability to find the net.

Perhaps not starting enough games and only be used as a late substitute have played a part, but, since joining Blackburn, Derbyshire’s goal tally has only once reached double figures over the course of a league season.  As it happens, that was during three months spent on loan with fourth division Wrexham in 2005/06.  Conversely, he had a loan spell at second division Plymouth Argyle for the first half of that particular season, where he failed to score.

Age may still be on Derbyshire’s side, but what better time for him to prove he’s still got it?
