Congolese champions look to stop Sunzu

Initially interested in him when he was just 19 years old, Stoppila Sunzu may finally be arriving at Reading at the age of 23.

The Zambian defender’s name may not be the most famous in world football, but last year saw him become one of the heroes of his nation, scoring the winning penalty in the shootout of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations final.

However, Sunzu had previously gained the attention of the Royals from his performances at the 2007 under-20 World Cup.  Despite being invited for trials at the club at the time, work permit problems meant that a permanent move for the player was unable to be completed.

Sunzu is currently away on international duty in South Africa, as Zambia attempt to defend the crown that they won in such dramatic fashion last year.  An incredible story in the country’s history was sealed by a spot-kick from the defender, who will be hoping for similar success this time around.

According to Sky Sports, his club, reigning Congolese champions TP Mazembe, expect to see the player again after the tournament.  Sunzu himself, however, believes his contract expired in December 2012, allowing him to finally make the move to England.

A medical has been passed and personal terms have been agreed in Berkshire, but could Sunzu find himself stranded and see his dreams crushed once again?
