Redknapp claims Levy promised Luka Madrid move

Former Spurs boss, Harry Redknapp has admited that Chairman Daniel Levy made a deal with want-away Midfielder Luka Modric.

What? A chairman lied? In football? Surely not? Tell me it's not true?

Okay, so after Modric's unsuccessful attempt to leave White Heart Lane last season, chairmen and critics hailed Spurs for showing great resilience and gave Levy the proverbial pat on the back for not caving in. Manchester City took a similar stance with their Argentine Striker Carlos Tevez, but in their case they would have been happy to ship their star but not on the cheap.There was no lying to the player. Now, former players and managers are coming out the woodwork to back up the Croatian Star.

Harry Redknapp has claimed that Levy told Luka Modric to "give us one more season and if Real Madrid come in, I won't stand in your way.”

Well, Levy, you are standing in his way. Why don't you step aside and let the man go? Oh you want more money? Well, that's okay then.

After Niko Kranjcar also admitted Levy lied to Modric, this revelation proves all the praise that Levy and co got last season was misguided. Didn't Ferguson also make a similar deal with Cristiano Ronaldo when he wanted to leave? The difference was Fergie kept his word. Of course it helped that Madrid were happy to pay a world record fee but there is a difference, Madrid knew he was worth it.

Levy can claim that he is trying to get the best deal for his club all he likes but keeping Modric after lying to him would be wrong. Yes, I know football is a business and all that rubbish but be a man – if you make a deal – stick to it. Do not hide behind a big transfer fee, claiming he can leave if it is met. Madrid will not be held to ransom. The player wants to leave so just let him go and use the time saved to bring in a replacement. If I want to leave my job, my employers can not stop me, (infact they are probably hoping I would leave), but why can they in football? Because of the contract they signed? Does that mean lying is okay then?

I am not suggesting for a minute that Levy under-sells, but why not be straight with Modric and tell him last season that he can only leave for £40 million?

If Levy is not the first chairman to lie to a player, it doesn't make what's happening right.

This entry is very good, well written and informative - the truth always comes out - this time I wish to thank the author of the entry for writing about this issue so clearly and honestly. When I was young, wise people told me that PRIDE is the greatest sin. Mr Levy, do what you said and stop pretending that you are greated than Moses. Stop deceiving yourself and all those around you that make you "big and important" person. Words are powerful, and if you said these words to Modric (and I belive you did say them) then do what you said. Be a real BIG man, swollow your pride and do what is right. The wise teacher also said that doing good heals us and all those we love. Be healthy and bring health to your loved ones Mr Levy - be a man of your word - let My Modric go.
