      Deconstructing the latest RVP rumour

Football is examined and placed under the microscope these days that any number of interpretations can be made upon a story.

For example, in the Daily Mirror today, it is reported that Sir Alex Ferguson has told close football friends that he is confident of beating Manchester City and Juventus to the signing of Robin van Persie and that the Arsenal forward will be plying his trade at Old Trafford next season.

The paper reports that Ferguson is keen to land van Persie to have a strike force with Wayne Rooney and he has confided in close friends he believes the Dutchman is on his way to Manchester United.

Now, let us undergo some over the top analysis.

Ferguson has a notorious distrust of much of the media meaning he is unlikely to seek to leak big news to a lot of the press.

However, he is also believed to have certain journalists that he trusts who he leaks things to as he knows they will be published. Whether the writers of the piece are in that group is open to question.

But, if he has indeed told close friends of his hopes for van Persie, it is probably likely that he wanted the news to come out. This could mean he wanted to spread rumours about van Persie; perhaps to get lips moving about the possible deal, perhaps to unsettle van Persie or to disrupt the preparations of Arsenal for the new season, to get on Manchester City’s wick or any number of devious reasons.

Or perhaps the story is a genuine leak. Or maybe he does actually believe that van Persie will be coming to United.

      Who honestly knows eh?
