Vortenghen eyes up Spurs move

In the same way that a few months back, Tottenham was the first choice destination for Eden Hazard, Ajax’s Jan Vertonghen has today made White Hart Lane his preferred option. Unlike Hazard however, this one is probably a bit more believable.
The Dutchman, who has one year left on his contract at the Amsterdam club, has been linked with a move to Spurs in the past and The Daily Telegraph today quotes an interview he had with the De Telegraaf newspaper speaking of his desire to move to North London.
Vertonghen said; “The board is asking a fair amount for a player who is only contracted for another year. I trust that Ajax and Spurs can turn water into wine and sort it out soon" thus utilising an underused cliché in football at an inappropriate time what with water not often turning into wine after an extended period of negotiations between two parties. But hey, I’m splitting hairs here.
The 25-year-old Belgian defender, who has a fair old scoring record for a centre back with nine goals in 35 games this season, has been at Ajax since the age of 16, progressing through the academy ranks to the club’s captain and he admits it will be difficult to leave the club
Vortenghen (who is firmly under my Ctrl+V control now) went on to say; "I owe a lot to Ajax but I have always given my heart and soul. My appreciation for the club and fans is great and it would be terrible if my farewell was marred by Ajax sticking to a great price. Of course I want Ajax to gain financially but the amount Tottenham are willing to pay – perhaps with a little extra – is very reasonable."
