MK Dons hope to get Smith

Does anybody remember Alan Smith? No? Get the Panini sticker books and scroll to about 4-6 years ago... Leeds... Manchester United striker-turned-midfielder? Oh yeah, you remember now, had blond hair... that's him. Surprisingly, he's still going and he's in the headlines again as he aims to move permanently from Newcastle to MK Dons.

That is according to MK News who believe the club have opened talks with Smith about signing on a full-time basis after impressing in his shock temporary move from Tyneside in January.

Not only did Smith play well on his loan spell in Milton Keynes, making eighteen appearances as the Dons narrowly missed out on success in the League One play-offs, but he also actually scored, twice, his first goals since netting in Manchester United's 7-1 demolition of Roma in the Champions League a whole five years ago.

Smith would be a free agent as his contract with Newcastle is due to expire in the summer and he discussed the potential deal with Dons manager Karl Robinson over a nice, civil round of golf, preferring that to the inane, banalitty of a conventional boardroom, according to Mk News.

Smith, who is only 31 despite seemingly being around longer than colour televisions, has other options at home and abroad according to the report by MK News, but the club don't believe Smith, or "Smudger" as he was more colloquially known, is motivated by money and that would help any large wage cut the ex-England star will have to endure by dropping down two divisions.

Sky Tyne and Wear also believe many other clubs are monitoring Smith's situation as talks go on with MK Dons, but only after researching who he is, of course.
