      Ashdown in Pompey challenge

Portsmouth goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown was a loan target for fellow Championship relegation candidates, Millwall, Michael Appleton has acknowledged.

The 36 year old manager has also said that he now hopes to retain the services of the shot stopper beyond the current campaign.

Ashdown had been number 2 to Stephen Henderson for much of the campaign, but after Henderson moved to The Lions East London rivals West Ham United, Appleton dismissed the idea.

With the former Reading goalkeeper out of contract in the summer, the ex West Brom coach has asked him to prove that he wants a contract extension.

Speaking to The News, Appleton said: 'Jamie's been frustrated himself. No-one likes to be a No.2 but he's responded well enough.'

'He's experienced. He's played Premier League football and he's been in and around some very good keepers with great experience.'

'At the end of the day, he's the same as most players. So it's up to him to prove he wants a contract beyond this season no matter what division we're in.'

With the South Coast side having to batten down the hatches to try and survive in the second tier, his manager and his fans will hope that the number 1 is up to the task.
