Blues take a chance on amatuer

Birmingham City are set to make a move for a non-league defender, hoping he has what it takes to play higher up the footballing pyramid.

Blues boss Chris Hughton is set to have Cheyenne Dunkley training with the club for the next even days, with a view to offering him a contract.

The 20 year-old is currently plying his trade in the glamorous level that is the Northern Premier League with Hednesford Town so playing at St. Andrews could be considered a slight step up in class.

Swansea City star Ashley Williams also use to play with the same non-league side, proof that picking up a player from that level can turn out to be a masterstroke in the long-term.

Dunkley will most probably take part in a reserve match for the Midlands side and may then go on another trial with some other sides, as he considers his highly promising future.

THe former Crewe youngster is thought to be a cultured, ball-playing centre-back in the same mould as Rio Ferdinand.
