      Stewart’s Downing the dumps

Stewart Downing has expressed his frustration at being cast aside by Brendan Rodgers but insists he would prefer to fight for a place than move elsewhere.

The English left-sided midfielder, much like Marmite, tends to split opinion. A proverbial under-achiever by some and perennially over-rated by others, but there’s only one opinion which matters to Downing, that of Mr Rodgers, and evidence thus far would suggest it falls in the latter.

Nonetheless, Downing continues to be upbeat on his future at Anfield – harbouring a fierce determination to gain the approval of him new manager.

Reported by Sky Sports, in an interview with The Sun, Downing said:

"It has been frustrating at times and I have been disappointed this season not to have played more games, but I am just trying to do my best when I play and to get a goal. It is a great club to play for. Hopefully it long continues."

The England international enjoyed regular first-team football under Rodger’s predecessor Kenny Dalglish, but is now in danger of being the forgotten man at Anfield with the majority of his appearances this season being restricted to the Europa League.

At the age of 28, Downing only has so many years at the top level left in him, and will surely have to consider a move away from Liverpool if Rodger’s continues to give him the cold shoulder.
