Alex sings the praises of Wenger’s selling mentality

Alex Song has publicly thanked his former boss, Arsene Wenger, for getting him to Barcelona in a goodwill gesture which, by definition, illustrates Arsenal’s downfall.

The Barcelona midfielder is a product of everything that makes Wenger a magnificent manager. Discovering the young Cameroonian at French club Bastia and signing him for a fee of £1 million, Wenger turned him into a key player in his side and one acknowledged by many as a world class defensive midfielder.

The subsequent transfer to Barcelona exemplifies the precise reason to why Arsenal is no longer recognised as Premier League title or Champions League contenders – in that they are a selling club.

In an interview by L’equipe, and reported by Sport Witness, Song said:

"I have spent years learning with him… I am in Barcelona, and it is thanks to Arsene. Nobody took a risk on me when I was in Bastia. He believed in me, I thank him, and look what he has built with Arsenal! I know from when I was seventeen years old, he educates me. I have lived with him daily. He will succeed and recover the club."

The sad irony is, though Song’s comments were meant in good faith, the very sentiment of his words belittle Arsenal to a club much lower than Barcelona’s standard.

    get a life!

Totally agree with above comment...what are you trying to prove?
That Arsene is a brilliant manager who doesn't buy success?

I believe the author is using Song's quote as an example of how players see moving away from Arsenal as a 'step up' - probably to get a rise out of Gooners, which is achieved through your comments. Congrats

good article. Supporting the selling club claim is the latest player to be set for a move: theo walcott and furthermore nani is reputedly linked to arsenal because he cant get a place in the united side. Arsenal are a 2nd rate club that has no shame in being way below the quality of utd. city and chelsea. As a life-long arsenal fan i hate to say it but we are a 2nd rate club thanks to wenger and his "economic" transfer deals.

Exactly. It seems that the Arsenal fan base is decidely split at the moment; those who acknowledge their demise and those who stubbornly refuse to come to terms with it. The worst are the idiots who ignorantly take solace in the fact that Arsenal 'run a good business'. Wake up, Gooners. If you want to support a 'business' then go ahead and swap your Arsenal shirt for an Apple one. As a football fan, your glory comes from your club's glory on the field, not off it. Arsene Wenger, as the coach, is not responsible for earning Arsenal Football Club money, but to bring them trophies!
