United prepare summer move for defender

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson looks set to make a shock summer swoop for Chelsea defender Ashley Cole. The Daily Mail suggests the highly decorated Scot is keen to strengthen his defence and has earmarked the England international as a possible target.

Cole’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires next summer and the 31-year-old is currently stalling on signing a new deal. Ferguson is prepared to take advantage of the situation and offer the 31-year-old the chance to move to Old Trafford.  

Cole has been offered a one-year extension by Blues chief executive Ron Gourlay, such is the policy for players over 30, but the former Arsenal trainee is demanding a two-year deal.
