Rangers’ Scottish Cup 4th Round exit at the hands of Dundee United last Saturday ensures that there will be no Old Firm derby in Scottish football this season for the first time since World War II.
Maybe it was a bit harsh, but Rangers Chief Executive Charles Green has posed the question this week:
"How can Manchester United's revenues be £320m and Aston Villa, who are completely useless, get £250m?"
This was in the context that he had predicted that a European League would be formed because big teams can't keep subsidising the small teams.
Away from the bubble of the European Championships, something rather important happened yesterday in the realm of Scottish football. That is, of course, if the words “important” and “Scottish football” in the same sentence do not make an oxymoron.
Dunfermline travel to Ibrox today for the first time since their promotion to the SPL. A young team sheet is expected; injuries have taken their toll. A “platform” upon which to build the strategy.

As the bustle of transfer deadline day passed in a wave of sporadic, underwhelming business, one piece of news seemed to go unnoticed, sneaking through the backdoor whilst everybody’s interest was hooked to the main transfer attractions. That news was not a signing, but the information that Blackburn had come to an agreement on the mutual termination of El Hadji Diouf’s contract, Steve Kean had lost patience and the striker was free to find another club.
During Celtic’s 3 0 win over Hearts on Wednesday night, a Hearts of Midlothian fan ran along the touchline and tried to attack Celtic manager Neil Lennon, failing to do any damage to the manager.
The league looks to have slipped past Celtic for another year running. A Celtic team full of hope gelled together by an excellent manager have thrown it all away but what I can’t tell is have they deserved to win the league?
We are down to the last 16 and anyone could lift the trophy in May - Liverpool, Manchester City and Rangers all face tricky away leg ties.
