It was an act that, to some, was deemed the most unacceptable, but far too much is being made of the Andre Santos-Robin van Persie shirt swap at half-time during Arsenal’s recent 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.
In recent weeks and days it has become rather easy to lambast and ridicule Arsenal’s Brazilian full-back Andre Santos. In brutal honesty, his performances at left-back since Kieran Gibbs’ injury have been nothing short of disastrous.
In the aftermath of Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, Jonathan Northcroft proclaimed on Twitter that “even a blind-drunk beautician, with dodgy waxing apparatus, couldn’t produce a worse Brazilian” when referring to left-back Andre Santos.
Those Twitter trolls have been at it again. I like to Twitter, it did take me a while to come round to the idea but I think it is a fantastic forum for people to share their views on anything they like. The whole trending thing, too, that's quite a smart idea. Unfortunately, you do get those who are a bit weak in the brain and use Twitter to abuse celebrities or sports stars. The red tops love reporting on it and, sadly, it is quite a regular occurrence.
Swapping shirts is nothing new in football. Players swap shirts as a mark of respect for one another after a match has finished; a symbol of unification for two men on opposing teams.
