Bundesliga Midfielder The Perfect Addition For Manchester United

The majority of Manchester United fans are quite adamant that this season is a write-off, and that a terrific summer overhaul is the best thing to look forward to from their struggling club, and flailing manager.

If reports are to be believed, David Moyes will be handed a transfer war-chest of £200m in the summer, with the Scot in the market for top-quality reinforcements, such as Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos. If you’re a fan of horse racing you’ll recognise the risk in betting on someone with a poor track record to come good just because you want them to.

Moyes has spent nearly £60m on Fellaini and Mata but the side has gone alarmingly backwards this season. How does giving him more money solve the issue? You have to hope that for United fans’ sake, the board know what they’re doing. This isn’t your annual ‘Cheltenham at Betfair’ ritual, this is a football team that has won everything for the last two decades. Gambling on their future with an unknown is folly.

However, if United are genuinely making a move for Kroos it will be a welcome one. The 24-year-old is one of the finest midfielders in the world at present, and with his contract set to expire in June 2015, United could well have a real opportunity to snap up the player. The long-running negotiations over a fresh deal at Bayern have stalled, with the with the Bundesliga giants reportedly refusing to meet Kroos’ wage demands.

Bagging Kroos this summer would be a real steal, but as we know from the January capture of Juan Mata, one player cannot revamp an entire team. Crucially, if United do get their man, Moyes must fathom a way of fitting all of his world-class attackers into side, and without pushing some into unfamiliar positions.

Kroos is a central midfielder who loves to join the attack and get into intelligent areas outside the box. His job is to orchestrate the midfield, sprinkling passes around, finding ways through even the toughest of defences. Against Schalke this season, he had 155 touches in the match (a Bundesliga record), while against Arsenal in the Champions League, he made over 150 passes.

With Arsenal down to 10 for the majority of the match, Kroos dominated proceedings from midfield, highlighting his extraordinary talent with a superb goal from the edge of the box. However, he needs a defensive midfielder alongside to give him the freedom to push forward. At Bayern he is paired with the likes of Javi Martinez, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Phillip Lahm; but who would he play alongside at United?

Kroos is perfect for a side that thrives on possession football, and bossing the midfield, but based on what we have seen this season, if the same issues remain at United next season, the German star would find it difficult to play his natural game. Therefore, buying further defensive depth in midfield must be of paramount importance for Moyes, so as to help his attackers. The end season form of Marouane Fellaini should be interesting viewing, as considering his size and aggressive nature, he could be a perfect foil to a player of Kroos’ ability, but only if his form improves!
