Moyes' Men: Rooney The Right Man To Captain Manchester United Into New Era

Wayne Rooney declared in a recent interview with ‘Inside United’ that he would love to take over the captaincy at Manchester United from the departing Nemanja Vidic, who is on his way to Inter Milan in the summer.

Rooney also expressed his desire to captain England in the future and with Steven Gerrard leading the national side into the World Cup in Brazil at the tender age of 32, Rooney looks the likely candidate to replace him.

But I wonder how Manchester United fans feel about Wayne Rooney becoming the new club captain at Old Trafford?

Rooney has had a tempestuous past with the United hierarchy. He supposedly handed in a transfer request at the end of last season when Sir Alex Ferguson left, leaving new manager David Moyes to work his magic and convince Rooney that he was in his plans for the future at Manchester United.  Despite signing a new £300,000 a week contract, doubts have to remain over his real desire to play for the club.

There is no doubting the world class talent of Rooney, though, with his never say die attitude towards every game and the unselfishness of his play is widely acclaimed. Always vocal and passionate, Rooney has won every domestic honour there is with Manchester United, so his experience as captain would be invaluable as David Moyes re shapes his side for next season.

Despite all his success with the club already, can Wayne Rooney become a true legend like Eric Cantona, Roy Keane and Bryan Robson, and lead Manchester united into anew golden era of English football?

    I think so.
