Toothless And Shambolic At The Back: Why Fulham Are Already Down And Out

Felix Magath’s Fulham side remain at the foot of the table following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat against fellow relegation strugglers Cardiff City, and I think that is where they will stay.

The west London club currently sit four points from safety, and with most of their rivals having a game in hand on them, that gap could increase.

In recent years Fulham have been seen as a mid-table team, never in danger of going down but also missing the squad depth and fire power to challenge the top teams.

Despite their January spending spree, none of the new recruits seem to be making much of an impact, apart from Lewis Holtby chipping in with a few goals. He cannot do it alone, though.

In my eyes, Olympiakos striker Konstantinos Mitroglou looked like an excellent signing, especially considering Dimitar Berbatov’s loan to super-rich Monaco.

The Greek international is a long-way off match fitness, however, yet Magath named Mitroglou and 19-year-old Cauley Woodrow against Cardiff.

It doesn’t say much for Darren Bent, that an untested teenager and an unfit player seem to be better options up front for Magath than the former Villa man.

For me, Magath’s biggest issue is the defence. They are leaking goals at an alarming rate - 65 so far this season and there aren’t many options for the manager to work with.

Fulham are a team in chaos with loan signings, untested youngsters, under-performing starters and veterans looking past their best, and to me relegation looks inevitable.
