Wayne Rooney: 200 goals and counting

Following a summer where he was continually linked with a move away from Manchester United, Wayne Rooney has begun the new season in blistering form is making David Moyes's transition to the big time a little easier.

Chelsea made three separate bids for the striker during the summer on back of Sir Alex Ferguson's admission that Rooney had handed in a transfer request and wanted to leave the club. It was probably at the very top of Moyes's list of priorities to maintain the services of Rooney and he will consider it a big success that he has.

Over the past two seasons Rooney has been subject to some scathing criticism because his productivity has reduced slightly. The criticism has been a tad unfair, in my opinion anyway, considering that United won the league at a canter last season - albeit relying more heavily on Robin van Persie's goals as opposed to Rooney's.

He is still a fantastic player, though, and he single handedly dissected a strong Bayer Leverkusen team on Tuesday night, scoring two goals in the process, the second of which made him only the fourth player in the club's history to reach 200 goals. That puts Rooney in some very special company and is a statement to all those who thought his time was done.

Some have been quick to dismiss United's title chances this season because of the change at the helm but if Rooney and van Persie continue their superb form then Moyes's job will be made a lot easier.

Anyway, here for your enjoyment is Wayne Rooney's first 100 league goals for Manchester United.
