Do Liverpool need to strengthen their squad?

A few games into the new season is when you can really gauge whether a team will need to bring in more faces in January, I thought I’d have a look at Liverpool’s squad and discuss areas they may need to add to.

On the players they have brought in, they have done extremely well in my eyes they have improved on the players they lost in that position. Sakho from PSG for eighteen million was an absolute coup - a twenty-two year old French international who is not only fast and strong, but is adequate enough to be able to read the game and tackle extremely well. Obviously, with the loss of an ageing Jamie Carragher, they needed someone and they did extremely well and they took advantage of his situation at PSG, where he became tired of being second fiddle to Marquinhos and Thiago Silva.

Moving onto the left wing position, it needed to be filled the moment that Stewart Downing left for West Ham, and obviously when a player of that immense quality leaves your club, you need it filled quick.

Which they did, with the loan signing of Victor Moses, who I thought did well at Chelsea - especially with limited chances at the first-team and has already scored for Liverpool. If he continues like he started, don’t be surprised to see him becoming a Liverpool player on a permanent basis.

With Pepe Reina being loaned to Napoli and the acquisition of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland, I think Liverpool fans will realise soon that this is a blessing in disguise, with Reina only having Brad Jones behind him pushing for his shirt, I think complacency definitely settled into Pep and in the last season or two has seen him fall off his perch at times and if he does return to Anfield next season, I think Reina pushing for Mignolet’s number one spot would be amazing. Mignolet is incredible at commanding his box and Reina’s distribution is second to none, so it’d be a good headache, as they say.

I genuinely think that the only position that may need strengthening is the left-back berth, and with reports suggesting they were after Bayern Munich full-back Contento, they may agree and Contento is an upcoming prospect through Munich, so would cost a fair bit if they do want him.

Yesterday proved your point, We lost Coutinho to that thug Williams who should have seen red not yellow, who replaces him Henderson ? No. Aspas? No Who else is there? Nobody. We will lose him for 6 weeks with the injury then another 4 weeks getting match fit. Johnson is out for half the season to another Evra bad challenge which went as usual unpunished. Kelly is struggling for fitness, Allan is out injured and it looks like Enrique's knee has gone again. We lost Susoko in his first game to yet another thuggish tackle.

What can I say? Normal service at LFC resumes.

Downing and 'immense quality' don't belong in the same sentence, left back is covered by Enrique and Sissokho, so i don't know where you're coming from on that one. The area which is our biggest problem is the midfield, we don't have a defensive midfielder, Lucas and Allen are not up to the job, Gerrard is getting on a bit and is playing far too deep, where he looks quite ineffective. we are far to soft there.

The big problem with this team, as roy the red said, is defensive midfield. Now lucas is a good solid player there and I actually think gerrard is better off playing there with him getting on in age. But what happens if either get injured. I like hendersen, I think he is doing a good job for the team, but I do not think he is going to come into that position and make a big impression. Allan is even less likely to be a suitable replacement there. You could bring him for Gerrard, but no point in having him replace Lucas. I think Rodgers made a mistake showing no interest in Parker, but its too late for ifs and buts. I think Suarez can come in and play in the position left by Coutinho, but he is a big loss in terms of options. Johnson is a huge loss, and I think the only player who can deputise him sufficiently in the team is Kelly, if he is fully fit. I would hope Enrique is fit as at the moment he is the best option for left back, at the very least until Aly Cissokho is fit again. I believe the Liverpool team is stronger, but the squad is lacking in a number of positions.
