Where do Manchester City signings leave Sergio Aguero?

With Manchester City completing the signings of two new strikers, where does this leave title-clinching hero Sergio Aguero?

The Argentina international’s last-second strike against QPR enabled City to lift their first ever Premier League trophy in 2012, but just over a year on that image has slowly faded.  Despite living long in the memory, rivals Manchester United have for the moment replaced what was a nightmare moment for them by winning their 20th first division title.  Whilst Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out after an illustrious 26-year career at Old Trafford, Roberto Mancini was sacked after barely an eighth of that period.

Incoming boss Manuel Pellegrini is a well-respected manager following his time in Spain, Argentina and his native Chile.  He will have his own ideas about how the team should play and Sergio Aguero will be hoping he is at the heart of his plans.  The arrivals of Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic for big money, however, may mean that is not the case.

Despite the departure of Carlos Tevez, Aguero will have to fight for a place in City’s starting lineup.  Not only will he have to battle the new signings, but also Edin Dzeko, who deputised impressively last season as Aguero struggled with injuries.  Despite the competition, the former Atletico Madrid man must fancy his chances of getting a game, having signed a one-year contract extension in May to keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2017.

City’s two new strikers have contrasting ages, with Jovetic a sprightly 23 years old and Negredo quickly approaching 28.  Aguero, meanwhile, finds himself in the middle of the two at 25.  Whether this puts him at an advantage or not is yet to be seen, but the club certainly have an interesting blend of frontmen to help them try and claw back the title from United.
