Why QPR’s demise could give Robert Green a chance to rebuild his career.

Robert Green was signed on a free transfer for QPR at the start of last season but the former England number one spent most of the season playing second fiddle to Brazilian Julio Cesar. However after having an impressive season with the doomed side Harry Redknapp admits that Julio Cesar will be sold over the summer to help reduce the wage bill. This is good news for Robert Green though as he will have the chance to take the number one jersey at the hoops.

At the age of 33 Green is entering the twilight of his career however he has certainly got at least five more years of playing at the highest level if fellow goalkeepers Brad Friedel (41) and Jussi Jaaskelainen (38) are anything to go by. Green is definitely a player that has a lot of ability and at his best he has always been touted as one of England’s brightest keepers (that mistake against the USA aside).

A long run out of the starting line up on the bench behind Julio Cesar will have knocked Green’s confidence a lot, however next season he will almost certainly have the opportunity to take over as QPR’s first choice goalkeeper as they look to bounce straight back into the Premier League.

Green only managed to make nine Premiership starts last year with the rest of the fixtures played by the former Inter Milan keeper Cesar. It appears now though that there is some interest in the Brazilian from both Arsenal and Napoli and if a bid is made it would be impossible for QPR to reject it because of their wage bill after some huge spending last season.

Now in the Championship QPR have no choice but to offload a lot of their high earners to make their finances more sustainable as they bid for promotion. Green will be hoping that next year when he gets his chance he will be able to prove why he is still a top goalkeeper and help the side progress back up the league.
