Roberto Martinez sets sights on Goodison Park

It is being reported in a couple of national papers today that FA cup winning manager Roberto Martinez is ready to tell chairman Dave Whelan he would like to leave relegated Wigan Athletic and take the over at the helm of Everton.

Martinez has been a name that has been linked with the Everton position ever since there was any sniff of Sir Alex Ferguson retiring which meant that David Moyes was likely to leave. Martinez has been described by his own Wigan players as a ‘tactical genius’ mostly for his incredible attention to detail and his ability to find a system which can work in very tough circumstances.

Nothing is more of a testament to Martinez’s tactical astuteness than Wigan’s fairy-tale like FA cup triumph over Manchester City this season. The Spaniard managed to find an answer to a Manchester City side which on paper should have ripped the Wigan defence to pieces, however Martinez squeezed all the space out of the Man City attack and they thoroughly deserved their victory.

He has masterminded Wigan escape plans from relegation year after year, however this year was just one too many relegation battle for the 'Latics' to handle. However with him delivering a much unexpected FA cup triumph to Dave Whelan it could be said that he deserves the respect from the chairman to be allowed to go and test himself elsewhere.

The 39-year-old now feels that the time has come for that test and Goodison Park could provide the perfect opportunity for him. One criticism of him though has always been though if he is really that good a manager why where Wigan always fighting relegation in the first place. This is something that he will be keen to shake off if he does make the move to Merseyside and he will want to prove that he is not just an end of season specialist.

Please no, we dont need a second rate relegated manager in charge

Although I am not an Everton fan, I would like to see Martinez at Goodison because he is a young up and coming manager just like David Moyes was when he was appointed. He could take the Toffees back into Europe no problem.
