Chelsea must stave off interest from Monaco for defender

When Branislav Ivanovic was first signed for Chelsea there wasn’t much fanfare around the Serbian he seemingly just slipped into Stamford Bridge for a £10 million pound transfer fee. He didn’t play at all in his first season at the club because of a lack of match fitness it wasn’t until 8 months after signing that he made his first appearance at the club.

Now Chelsea fans must all be in agreement that you wouldn’t want him missing a single game as he has become somewhat of a rock in the heart of the Chelsea defence. He is now an integral part of the Chelsea back line, rumours have begun to circulate that AS Monaco are interested in the player but for Chelsea it is important that they dismiss this interest as soon as possible.

Ivanovic is a lot like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the terminator in the way that he turns up every week and plays with minimal fuss but you just know he’ll get the job done. He has become that ‘reliable guy’ like John Terry has been for so many years, he is the substance in Chelsea’s defence that is the perfect compliment to the style provided by their midfield flair. Although the rumours have only just arisen it is imperative that the Premier league side say no to Monaco sooner rather than later as I think a Chelsea side without Ivanovic is definitely a weaker one.

Newly promoted Monaco are loaded with cash and they are willing to spend whatever it takes to make progress in the French Ligue 1 which means they would have no problem with any price tag Chelsea put on the defender.  Although Chelsea aren’t exactly strapped for cash as we all know and they could easily find a replacement but could they find a replacement who can take a bite from little Uruguayan’s!

Most fans will expect that nothing will come of these rumours but the fact that they are existent would be enough to put a slight bit of worry into the minds of Branislav’s biggest fans. The Serbian captain has become one of the most important players on the Chelsea team sheet and incoming manager Jose Mourinho will be intent on quashing the rumours surrounding Ivanovic and allowing him to just concentrate on the season ahead doing what he does best … destroying opposition attacks.
