    Why we love David Beckham

It seems that 2013 is the year of retirement in football as David Beckham has decided to call time on what can only be described as a glittering career.

The 38-year-old may not have been the most gifted of footballers but he was a consummate professional who always gave nothing less than 100% for club and country.

The former Manchester United man also laid the groundwork for footballers to becomes businessmen as the Beckham brand is now globally recognised and made the boy from Leystonstone a very rich man indeed.

He has branched away from the sport and utilised his popularity to thrive in other markets such as clothing. Beckham is also a fine ambassador for his country and played a key part in ensuring that the Olympics were held in London last year.

As he said in his announcement he wished to go out whilst on top and certainly has done that having made history by becoming the first Englishman to win four European league trophies as PSG wrapped up the Ligue 1 title this past weekend.

Simply put he is a national hero and, most importantly, he has provided us with some fantastic footballing memories. The halfway line goal against Wimbledon, that free kick against Greece and the redemption penalty against Argentina.

So, enjoy your retirement Mr Beckham and there will never be another who can bend it quite like you.
