Chelsea could make £15m defender first signing of the season

With Chelsea still looking for a new manager for next season, although a certain Portuguese chap is likely to be appointed, they continue to sound out transfer targets to fight off the Manchester clubs in order to regain the Premier League trophy. This time, according to the Express, the man in contention for a move to the Bridge is Southampton starlet Luke Shaw.

However, there is a twist, the Blues will have to fight off competition from London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham for the youngster's signature. Arsene Wenger will be stood cross armed in his kitchen as we speak moaning to his cat that those 'big boys' are picking on him again.

The 17-year-old has excelled in the English topflight this season and is highly likely to depart from St Mary's in the summer as the cash begins to be flashed, especially if manager Mauricio Pochettino quits as he has threatened.

Shaw has the pick of the Premier League but seems to be fond of the capital as he was born in the city and has recently revealed that he is a lifelong Chelsea fan. Unlucky north London, that's 1-0 to the west.

Will we see the youngster burstin down the wing at Stamford Bridge next season? Well, yes. He is a Southampton player afterall...

I think you'll find they will be fighting off competition from Southampton as well

Bill's right. I doubt Cortese and Poch will leave, and Soton will be eager to keep their stars what with all of the Europe talk. Plus I believe Shaw just signed a new contract with The Saints. This article would make more sense if if was about Clyne, but only because Soton are looking into a new RB and Chelsea have shown interest in Clyne.

Luke Shaw would fit Chelsea's recent spending pattern. Recently Chelsea has not spent big on players in their late twenties (Ba at 27 only cost 7m). They spend big on players in their early twenties (Hazard 32m, Oscar 25m). Players like Hazard can give 10 years service and Financial Fair Play allows the cost to be spread over the years he plays. This is also why Lewandowski (24 at 30m) makes more sense than Falcao (27 at 46m).

Having been used to the likes of Courtinho at Real Madrid and Ashley Cole at the Bridge Jose is extremely unlikely to want to go for Luke Shaw who is very average by comparison. He is going to be looking for players capable of winning the Premiership again next season and Shaw does NOT come into that catagorie.
