Wigan's FA Cup win could come back to haunt them

With the draw for the FA Cup swinging favourably towards Millwall, Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic, the former duo to face a replay following their 0-0 draw on Sunday, it means one of the three teams are guaranteed a place in Europe next season, provided Chelsea finish fifth or higher.

Many believed that Everton could've gone on to secure domestic glory this season, but following Wigan's dismantling of David Moyes' side at Goodison Park on Saturday, the Latics will be confident they can lift the trophy come May.

The win over the Toffees, however, could come at a cost to Roberto Martinez's men. Regardless of the game in hand they now possess, Aston Villa and Queen's Park Rangers' respective wins at the weekend mean that the battle to stave off relegation has been that much more difficult for the Latics.

Furthermore, the participation in the FA Cup means they have another competition to focus on rather than securing their Premier League safety. Martinez will be hopeful that his side can draw on the winning run they regularly go on between now and the end of the season over recent years in order to survive.

However, while the glory of a trophy is unparalleled, the extra impetus to secure glory and stay up could be a big ask for Wigan, who could find themselves in the Europa League and in the Championship next season.
