Mancini could break bank for ex-player

Roberto Mancini could be about to make a breakthrough in his attempts to bolster his squad's defensive options as he makes a move for Inter Milan right-back Maicon.

Manchester City have offered £4 million for the Brazilian who Mancini managed during his time at the San Siro, and are willing to rise to his massive £100,000 a week wage demands to bring him to Eastlands.

Inter however, are believed to be holding out for a larger transfer fee for Maicon, who they value at £5.5 million.

Mancini's pursuit of the 31 year old is likely to run until the transfer window's final day as the Italian strives to bring more defensive cover to his City squad, with Fiorentina centre-half Matija Nastasic also close to agreeing a deal.
