City line up Clichy replacement as the axe nears

If you were looking for a perfect example of Manchester City wasting money on signings that have brought nothing extra to the club then Gael Clichy would be high up on your list, ok at least he actually played first team football unlike the likes of Scott Sinclair and Jack Rodwell but he has no exactly lived up to his multi million pound billing. It seems that City are ready to admit their losses on Clichy and are targeting PSV fullback Jetro Willems according to The Metro.

Willems, at just 19, is hugely rated and is being reported as one of a number of targets for Roberto Mancini as he wields the axe and looks to renergise his stagnated squad. Clichy had been a fairly consistent starter last season however like many he has suffered a seemingly never ending hangover from that success and has been battling with Aleksander Kolorov for much of the season for a starting birth.

With that in mind it would seem that he could be one of three ex Arsenal players to be shipped out this summer, a fact that will no doubt amuse Gunners given all three left for apparent greater things. Whether Willems is the answer to the clubs left back troubles remains to be seen, but he would certainly come with more promise than the perhaps surprising signing of Clichy a couple of years ago.
