Newly crowned champions plan summer spending spree

Much was made of Manchester City’s failure to build on their title triumph last summer with Roberto Mancini blaming the board for not backing him with sufficient funds to retain the Premier League title. Quite who he blames for his decision to sign Scott Sinclair though is unclear.

According to The Daily Mirror Sir Alex won’t be making the same mistake. The paper reports that Manchester United will add £50m worth of talent to their title winning side in an effort to further exert their dominance on English football – as if 20 titles wasn’t dominance enough.

Amongst their targets are apparently Everton defender Leighton Baines, Atletico Madrid forward Radomel Falcao and Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski. Not too shabby.

Although Ferguson does seem to have something of a preference for stockpiling strikers, it seems unlikely that both Lewandowski and Falcao would move to Old Trafford without a few exits from United’s already jam-packed forward line.

The man to make way could well be Wayne Rooney with his future at the club unclear after a rather disappointing season for the England international. Both PSG and Bayern Munich are thought to be interested in securing the 28-year-old’s services in the summer and if Ferguson does make a move for one of Falcao or Lewandowki it could persuade Rooney to seek more playing time elsewhere in Europe.
