    Ajax starlet wants City move

21-year-old, Christian Eriksen has indicated that Manchester City would be his preferred choice when he leaves Ajax this summer.

The Metro reports that he has told Danish paper Algemeen Dagblad “If I could play for a club like Manchester City, why not?

“There I should be able to play football and then I could develop. I would be a better player.”

Now I don’t want to be one of those people that arbitrarily questions footballers’ intelligence on the sole basis that they are footballers. I mean there are proven cases out there of players who weren’t lacking in the brain department, Gareth Southgate, the legend that is Gary Neville, there was also the whole Le Saux, alleged Guardian reading thing, but...

Eriksen’s comments leave me wondering again. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a good player, actually a very good player but exactly how many games does he expect to start at City next season? I’d wager no more than 10.Bear in mind this is the same player who turned down Chelsea as a teenager because ‘he wanted to play’.

There’s nothing wrong with having ambition and a belief in your own ability, that’s probably a lot to do with what makes Eriksen the player he is. I do think you need to be realistic though.

If, as reported he wants a move to the Premier League and wants to ‘develop’ then surely a logical step would be a move to a Tottenham or a Liverpool maybe even an Arsenal. No disrespect to any of those clubs but he would have a much greater chance of playing.

If after that he’s proved his worth then the massive teams will still come calling and he will be coming in from a position of relative power. This in itself will be no guarantee that he isn’t still then warming the bench but at least he would have had three or four year’s top level football under his belt.
