City set to make 'Spectacular Signings'

The Metro is reporting that Niall Quinn has gone out on his famously elongated limbs and suggested that Manchester City will make ‘spectacular signings’ during the summer with a view to wresting the league title back from their local rivals. As wild stabs in the dark go, this one is measured and with the light on.

No one could accuse Sheikh Mansour of not putting his hand in his pocket since acquiring the club in September 2008. Even during last pre-season, when mutterings have been that Mancini was decidedly underwhelmed with the transfer activity, the club still managed to spend around £50 million.

Some of the names linked are indeed ‘spectacular’ if not altogether surprising, Messrs Cavani, Falcao and Suarez appear to be perennially Eastlands bound. The interesting thing to note will be when the first of the signings actually take place, will it give a clue to Mancini’s position?  Will it be a ‘De Rossi’ someone he has clearly long admired or will it be a ‘Michael Essien’. The only surprise and the much bigger story would be if there were no goings-on at City at all.
